Superbeacon MK I

  • Encouraged by the success of the backup beacon on the Goliath/HAPS-1 launch I've slightly improved the backup beacon.
  • Components:
    • Arduino Mini Pro
    • EM406a GPS unit
    • Circuit Design CDP-TX-04S-R Radio (434.075MHz, 10mW)
    • 2000mAh LiPo
  • Theory
    • Pips out Lat, Lon and Alt
    • Beacon for 3 minutes
    • Repeat

  • Potential Problems
    • The EM406a is a SIRF III gps unit which means that it won't work above 24km altitude - hopefully it'll restart once it has returned below that altitude. During this period the beacon should continue to broadcast. This could be solved by using a Lassen IQ gps module - perhaps something for MK II
